Getting started

Install

The download page has the build for your platform, its checksum, and what your operating system will do about it. Nothing in this release is code-signed, and that plays out differently on each one.

Windows

  1. Run the installer. It is per-user: no administrator rights, and it installs into your own profile.
  2. SmartScreen warns, and More info then Run anyway continues. Smart App Control, which is on by default on many clean Windows 11 installs, refuses it outright with no way to continue. If yours has it enabled, this build will not run.

Linux

  1. chmod +x the AppImage and run it. Nothing is installed and nothing else is required. Being unsigned costs you nothing here.

The SHA-256 of every file is published either way, so you can confirm what you downloaded is what was built.

Everything RPCTION needs ships inside it, including the text-recognition model. Nothing is downloaded during installation or afterwards.

First run

  1. RPCTION starts into the system tray and shows a short setup.
  2. Grant screen access when your system asks, the desktop portal on Wayland. RPCTION cannot see what you are pointing at without it.
  3. Press CTRL SHIFT R anywhere. On Wayland the compositor owns global shortcuts, so bind it in your desktop settings instead.
  4. Move the pointer. The thing under it is outlined and labelled.
  5. Click. The obvious action runs and the overlay disappears.

Your first useful thing

Find a screenshot someone sent you that has a phone number or a link in it, the kind you would normally retype. Activate RPCTION, point at it, click. It is on your clipboard.

If nothing is highlighted

Give it a moment. Recognition runs on the region under your cursor first and the rest of the screen a beat later, so a target at the edge of a large display can take a second longer. If it stays empty, see troubleshooting.
